3. How to Talk in the Meeting Rooms

Room Participants

After you enter the virtual room, your name will appear in the Participants box in black. You can then interact with other participants using your microphone or via text. To speak, press CTRL. Only one user can talk at the same time. Make sure your microphone is connected properly. Adjust its volume and that of your speakers using the graphical controls in the upper part of the room window. If another person is speaking, you can nonetheless keep the CTRL key pressed, which will keep you in a waiting list to use the microphone. If you want to speak "hands free", press CTRL-H as you speak.

The room will keep you informed regarding the status of your internet connection. This status can go from "bad" to "excelent" for each participant.

Room Moderators

To enter the room as a moderator, you need a special password. Moderator names appear in a different color. They have control over the room. To show presentations hosted in the internet (preferred method), the moderators can use the browser window and keep all participants synchronized so that each can accompany the presentation.

Moderators can also present files from their computers by using the Application Sharing window, and in this way all participants can see the file.

Troubleshooting

To test your microphone, open Sound Recorder in Windows. Here’s how:
  1. Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Entertainment --> Sound Recorder;
  2. In the Sound Recorder application, you can press record and try to record your voice;
  3. If it is not working, the most likely problems are a) you have not connected the microphone properly, or b) your audio settings need to be changed;
  4. To do this, click on the Volume Control (in the same location as the Sound Recorder application), and select Options --> Properties;
  5. Make sure “Microphone” is selected;
  6. Now click on Options --> Advanced. Make sure the mute button is deselected under microphone.
